Macrocyclic alkenes are key intermediates for the synthesis of muscone. Naturally present in musk, muscone has long been one of the rarest and most precious natural fragrances.

Clinically, it is applied to treat coronary heart disease, angina pectoris, vascular headache and sciatica. According to national pharmacopoeia records, musk is an ingredient in 10% of traditional Chinese patent medicines. A treasure in medicinal materials as well as a highly valuable fragrance, musk can enhance, mellow and balance the aroma of flavors, and prolong fragrance retention.
As early as the Eastern Han Dynasty, musk was hailed as the "King of Fragrances". Adding as little as one ten-thousandth of musk to a flavor can render the aroma soft, attractive and long-lasting. Pharmacological tests have verified that synthetic muscone shares similar pharmacological effects with natural muscone.
